Reports about new Apple hardware products have become completely normal over the years. But software always remained a well-kept secret until shortly before its official presentation - but not with iOS 14.
While rumors and leaks about new iPhones have become the most normal thing in this world, software leaks remain a rarity, right? Not in the case of iOS 14. The leaked iOS 14 version is said to have been released into the wild via a stolen iPhone 11 Pro. It is assumed that the device came from Apple's supply chain in China. Sources from the jailbreak community explained to Motherboard that leaks about upcoming Apple products are not uncommon - but a complete iOS version is. In fact, this has never happened before, as in the current case. The device is said to have been sold for a lot of money. The buyer then extracted the internal iOS 14 build, which was dated December 2019. The code itself was then copied and resold to several interested parties. Independent security researchers confirmed to motherboardthat they also received a very early version of iOS 14. But they took the opportunity to examine the code for vulnerabilities.
Some rejected offers for fear of consequences
Since this build is a very early version of iOS 14, there is a chance that Apple will not actually implement all the features that have been discovered so far. This means that Apple could announce the new version on June 22nd – as part of the WWDC 2020 - introduce an iOS 14 version that will not have all the features or will contain completely new functions. In addition to security researchers, the build was also distributed in the jailbreak community. There, the copied code is said to have been installed on a device with activated root access. But not everyone was interested in the internal version. The sources explained to Motherboard that some were afraid of Apple. Cupertino is notorious when it comes to leaks. In this case, however, Apple has not yet made a statement. Announcements about possible consequences have not been publicly documented either. Finally, the sources stated that Apple's security in terms of leaks has deteriorated significantly. We will see in the next few years whether this incident will remain an isolated case.
