Earlier this year, Apple launched a new program called the Apple Security Research Device Program to help security researchers find vulnerabilities in iOS and its own iPhone devices. They have been able to apply for the special hardware since June. Now the company has started sending "rooted" iPhones to those who are accepted.
Citing its own sources, the US blog MacRumorsthat the first researchers who applied for the program were informed about the modified iPhone today. According to Apple, these devices have already been shipped and should be delivered to the security researchers in the next few days. The modified iPhone will ship with root access enabled by default, which is similar to the jailbreak procedure. This allows the security researchers to more easily analyze the core of the operating system without having to rely on unauthorized third-party modifications.
SRD program: rewards for discovered security vulnerabilities
The Security Research Device (SRD) is intended for use in a controlled environment for security research only. You have shell access and can run any tools you want and choose your permissions. Otherwise, the SRD behaves as close to a standard iPhone as possible to be a representative research target.
Apple explained that modified iPhones are provided on loan and must be returned to the company after 12 months if the developer decides not to renew their participation in the program. Any security vulnerabilities found must be reported to Apple. These are rewarded through the Apple Security Bounty program. Security researchers can find out about the requirements for participating in the program on the Apple Developer website. inform. (Photo by manae / Bigstockphoto)
