The long-awaited Sparkasse Girocard support for Apple Pay was officially launched on August 25, 2020 startedBut so far, payment on the web is not supported. But that should change soon.
Last year, Sparkasse customers were promised that they would be able to support the Girocard in Apple Pay alongside credit cards. Since August, the plastic has been able to be stored in the iPhone wallet - but with restrictions. Anyone who uses the Girocard in Apple Pay cannot make payments abroad or on the web or in an app. Now, however, there is news regarding payments on the web and in an app. A Twitter user has questioned exactly this and has received a response from Sparkasse. receive. It states:
Girocard & Apple Pay: Online payments with a catch
Currently, Apple Pay with the Girocard can only be used in stores. Shopping with Apple Pay and the Girocard in apps or on the web via the Safari browser will also be possible at the beginning of 2021.
According to this, it could be ready in early 2021. Even if no specific date has been given, there is at least a reference point. But be careful - as soon as support for payments on the web via the Safari browser or app has been introduced, this does not mean that customers can get started straight away. Online retailers must also upgrade here and explicitly list the Girocard as a payment method. Because one thing must not be forgotten: just because Apple Pay is accepted does not mean that every card stored in Apple Pay is also accepted by the retailer. Apple's payment method is often only accepted in conjunction with Visa and Mastercard, but not Amex. (Image: Finanz Informatik / Sparkasse)
