On December 11, 2017, Apple announced via press release that it wanted to take over the music recognition service Shazam. The EU then expressed concerns that Apple could become too powerful.
The EU Commission needed nine months to review the takeover. In the end, the EU competition authorities approved the purchase. Apple then announced the first innovation via a press release. Shazam will be ad-free for all customers, although Apple did not give an exact date.
Plans still unknown
But now the time has come. With the current version 12.5.1, the advertising has been removed from the app. The update was released on December 11, 2018 in the AppStore. What exact plans the iGroup has for the music recognition service remains unknown. Apple could achieve better advantages in music recognition by implementing the service directly into its own system. The elimination of advertising will certainly please all users. Shazam has over a billion downloads. The app is used over 20 million times a day.
