With the release of the fifth beta version of iOS 18, Apple is bringing some notable new features and design updates. These improvements are aimed at optimizing the user experience and addressing feedback from beta testers. Below, you'll learn all about the latest changes in iOS 18 beta 5, including updates to the Photos app, new Safari features, and other minor tweaks.
Apple has once again shown in iOS 18 Beta 5 that they listen to user feedback and are continuously working to improve their software. Even though it's late in the beta testing process, the latest changes offer some exciting new features. Here's a detailed overview of the new features and design updates.
Changes to the Photos app
Apple has tweaked the design of the Photos app to make it more user-friendly. The carousel that allowed you to browse through different collections has been removed. This change makes the app less confusing and repetitive.
Uniform one-screen design
The Photos app retains its consistent one-screen design that opens to the photo grid where you can see all your photos. The update now allows more grid images to be shown at once, and lets you scroll down to get to collections.
Improved album display
Users with multiple albums will now see their albums higher up in the Photos app. Newly saved content is integrated into the Recents collection. You can still customize the order of collections and decide what you want to see in the Photos app.
Distraction Control in Safari
Apple has integrated a new distraction control feature into Safari. This feature allows you to hide distracting elements on a web page, such as login windows, cookie settings, GDPR notices, banners, and auto-playing videos.
No ad blocker
Distraction Control is not an ad blocker and does not hide dynamic elements such as advertisements. It is designed to temporarily hide static page elements. The feature can be enabled via Safari's website settings.
Home screen options
A new option called “Edit Pages” is now available when you long-press on the home screen and select “Edit.” This setting allows you to delete or hide entire home screen pages.
Better labeling
The page editing interface is cleaner and has better labels, making it easier to manage your home screen pages.
icons in dark mode
Apple has also made some changes to the dark mode icons. The map icon has been redesigned and now appears in black, white, gray, and blue. The Find My icon now has clearer rings in different shades of green.
Search in dark mode
When you search for an app in dark mode, the app icon will now display correctly in dark mode. Previously, search would display icons in light mode, causing confusion.
control center
Apple has changed the design of some Control Center icons. Several icons now have larger graphics, and there are several design changes. The broken Bluetooth "Power Toggle" setting that appeared in the last beta has been removed.
