Apple Intelligence: The future of AI at Apple - but not for Germany? At the recent "It's Glowtime" event, Apple presented its new developments and caused a great deal of excitement. But while the USA is making a big leap in the field of artificial intelligence, German users are left empty-handed. Why is Apple leaving German users out in 2025, and what is behind this decision?
Expectations are always high for Apple, especially when it comes to innovative technologies. The introduction of Apple Intelligence ushered in a new era of AI in Apple devices, but the announcement also brought disappointment. German users who were looking forward to the AI features will have to continue to be patient.
Apple Intelligence – What is it?
Apple Intelligence is Apple's latest AI development, which provides for a deeper integration of artificial intelligence into its products such as iPhones, iPads and Macs. The functions are diverse: from AI-powered summarization of emails and notifications to advanced image editing tools and automatic text rephrasing - Apple aims to make users' everyday lives smarter and more efficient.
focus on the US market
The big disappointment, however, came when Apple announced at the "It's Glowtime" event that the Apple Intelligence features will initially only be available to US users and only in English. With the update to iOS 18.1, which is expected in October 2024, the AI capabilities will be unlocked in American English - and only in the US for the time being. This means that German users and other European countries that are not part of the English-speaking regions will miss out for the time being. This is particularly disappointing because Apple plans to support other English dialects such as British, Australian and Canadian English by the end of 2024, but is not considering languages such as German, Italian or other European languages for the time being.
What will happen in 2025?
Apple plans to add support for additional languages such as Chinese, French, Japanese and Spanish in 2025. It is notable that German is not supported in this list is missing, although it is one of the most spoken languages in Europe. One possible reason could be that French and Spanish are also very important in countries outside Europe and Apple sets its priorities accordingly.
Which functions are left behind for German users?
In addition to the basic functions mentioned above, such as email summaries and image editing tools, more advanced features such as Genmoji and Image Playgrounds are also to follow. However, it remains unclear whether and when these will be available in Europe or specifically in Germany. It is almost certain that these functions will not be activated in the EU at first, which raises the question: Why this exclusion?
Possible reasons for Apple's decision
Apple did not provide any detailed explanations at the event as to why Europe, and specifically Germany, is not on the priority list. It is suspected that the EU's Digital Markets Act could be a major reason. This legal framework could force Apple to make its AI features available to third parties, which the company may want to avoid. Interestingly, Apple did not mention the EU's AI Act, which regulates the use of AI, as a problem. There may be fewer concerns here, as Apple can probably easily prove the origin of the training data for the AI. Nevertheless, the question remains as to why German users have to wait so long.
Apple Intelligence: German users still have to wait
The introduction of Apple Intelligence marks an important step in the development of AI-based technologies at Apple. But while users in the US and English-speaking countries will enjoy the benefits of this innovation, German users will have to do without these advanced features for the time being. The reasons for this are likely to be regulatory challenges and strategic decisions by Apple. But one thing is certain: German Apple users will follow the developments with interest and hope that they will not be left out for too long. So if you are an Apple user, the answer is: wait and hope that Apple will soon support the German language. Until then, the question remains how Apple will position itself on the AI market in the coming years - and whether Germany will play a bigger role in the future. (Image: Apple)
