With the latest update, the AirPlay function in the Netflix app was removed. Why the streaming service no longer supports AirPlay as of version 11.27.2 is explained in a support document, among other things.
Netflix explained this situation in a support document and gave The Verge another reason for doing so. The reason for removing AirPlay was due to technical limitations - according to the support document. Since AirPlay 2 is available for all smart TVs, the Netflix app cannot determine the exact device type - but this is important for optimizing the transmission. The streaming provider is therefore unable to meet its own quality standards for playback and was forced to switch off the function - Netflix told The Verge.
The statement in full:
“We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn't a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn't) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices.”
It has not been communicated whether Netflix will integrate AirPlay support into its own iOS app at some point – members should switch to the Apple TV or respective Smart TV app in the future, explains Netflix.
