Apple boss Tim Cook gave a presentation today at the virtual conference “Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection”. Among other things, he criticized Facebook’s business model.
Speaking at the virtual Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection conference, Tim Cook condemned the business model of companies like Facebook and highlighted Apple's commitment to protecting users' privacy.
In an age of rampant disinformation and algorithm-fueled conspiracy theories, we can no longer turn a blind eye to a technology that says any engagement is a good engagement—the longer the better—all with the goal of collecting as much data as possible. It's long past time to stop pretending that this approach doesn't come with costs—polarization, lost trust, and, yes, violence.
App tracking transparency will be introduced in spring
Cook highlighted two measures that Apple has recently taken to protect privacy, including the data protection label in the App Store and App Tracking Transparency, where apps will have to ask for permission to track users starting with the next betas of iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and tvOS 14. According to Apple, the corresponding updates will be released in spring. If you want to see Cook's statement, you can find the video on YouTube – the section starts at 3.50 minutes. (Image: Apple)
