macOS Monterey was revealed during the WWDC 2021 keynote with a redesigned Safari, the Universal Control feature, and more. Although Apple didn't highlight them, there are some new features that are only available on the M1 Macs.
With the second large Software update that takes advantage of Apple silicon also includes interesting features that are only available for Macs with proprietary processors. Here we go:
- Portrait mode on FaceTime: Only M1 Macs running macOS Monterey will be able to blur the background of a video call with FaceTime.
- Live Text in Photos: Gives users the ability to interact with text in photos, such as copying and pasting, looking up, and translating. Live Text will work in Photos, Screenshot, Quick Look, and Safari.
macOS Monterey: Object detection, Siri & more
- Maps: The interactive globe and detailed new city view will only be available on M1 Macs with macOS Monterey. With these two features, users will be able to interact with a 3D globe and explore cities with details for elevation, roads, trees, buildings, landmarks, and more.

- Object Capture: On macOS Monterey, users will be able to transform a series of 2D images into a photorealistic 3D object optimized for AR – in just a few minutes.
- Siri: Neural speech in multiple languages will be available only on M1 Macs. With macOS Monterey, this feature will also be available in additional languages, including Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish.
- On-device dictation: Keyboard dictation helps protect user privacy because all processing is done completely offline. With macOS Monterey, users can dictate text of any length without timing out.
