Apple's latest macOS Monterey update is causing malfunctions on some Macs that have had the logic board replaced, according to user reports on social media and the Apple Support forum.
The macOS Monterey 12.3 update, released on Monday, is reportedly causing issues for users attempting to upgrade from macOS 12.2.1 or earlier. According to posts in support forum errors occur, endless reboot loops occur, and the device may be bricked. According to reports, only Mac devices with a replaced logic board are affected by the problem. Although the macOS Monterey 12.3 update appears to crash some Mac devices, other reports show that an affected Mac can also reboot without the update being successfully installed. In these cases, users report seeing an "iBoot Panic" message. Similar threads have also appeared on Reddit, such as the first report from MacRumors on Thursday shows. There are even more accounts in the website's forums.
macOS Monterey 12.3: Not all users are happy with the update
Users are reportedly able to repair their bricked Macs by booting into DFU mode and manually reviving it, but they will need a second Mac handy to do so. Some users also report successfully installing macOS Monterey 12.3 on a Mac with a replaced logic board using IPSW files. However, as with restoring a Mac in DFU mode, this method requires a second Apple computer. In at least some cases, users who have brought their Macs to Apple for service report that technicians simply replaced the logic board on their devices again. But the second repair does not seem to fix the problem. Apple has here a guide on how to revive an Apple Silicon Mac – another guide on Intel-based Macs can be found here. However, the company has not yet confirmed the issue with macOS 12.3. (Photo by insidestudio / Bigstockphoto)
