Earlier this year, it was reported that Apple was working on a successor to the current Mac Pro, which would be equipped with an Intel processor instead of an Apple Silicon chip. Now clues have been discovered in the code of macOS 11.4 RC.
According to the US blog, MacRumors contributor Steve Moser has discovered a reference to an unreleased 10-core Intel i9 processor in the latest macOS Big Sur 11.4 RC update, which was released yesterday. A 10-core Intel chip appeared in Geekbench results related to an iMac in July last year. But last month, Apple introduced the first iMac equipped with an Apple silicon chip. Given this announcement, it is unlikely that the company will update its iMac lineup with more Intel chips and rely on Apple silicon instead.
Mac Pro could be the last to be switched
The Mac Pro, used by high-end professionals, could be one of the last Macs to be equipped with Apple silicon. In the meantime, Apple could update the current Mac Pro design with a newer Intel processor, such as the one referenced in the latest macOS update. Apple has already stated that the transition to Apple silicon, which began last November, will last at least two years. Accordingly, the Mac Pro could be one of the last Macs to be switched over.
