Apple acknowledged a problem with the SSD in the MacBook Pro 13" model in the first half of November and promised a free repair. This means that affected users will have the repair or replacement carried out free of charge by Apple or an authorized Apple dealer.
The MacBook Pro 13" is struggling with a serious hardware error. In some models, the SSD fails completely and can cause data loss. Affected models are MacBook Pro 13" devices without TouchBar that were sold between June 2017 and June 2018. Apple offers a verification process for this on its own homepage. Using the serial number, you can check whether your own device is affected by the problem. Here, too, anyone who has previously paid for a replacement can claim their money back by submitting a claim.
"Important information about your MacBook Pro"
Now, however, Apple seems to want to make sure that potentially affected parties are aware of the action. The iGroup has sent a circular email entitled "Important information about your MacBook Pro" to the respective users. The email states: "Apple has determined that a limited number of 128 GB and 256 GB solid-state drives (SSD) used in 13" MacBook Pro models (without Touch Bar) have a defect that may lead to data loss or drive failure. The 13" MacBook Pro models with the affected drives were sold between June 2017 and June 2018."
It continues: "Our records indicate that you have a MacBook Pro with an affected solid-state drive - your drive may be replaceable by Apple at no charge."
Before affected users make use of such a repair, they are also asked to create a backup. Further information on the service program is available here.
