Apple released macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 yesterday to fix an issue that may prevent the battery from charging on some MacBook Pro models. A new support document has now been provided.
With macOS Big Sur 11.2.1, Apple wants to fix a bug fix, which prevents some 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models from charging. According to the company, a "very small number of customers" are affected. The support document states:
A very small number of customers with 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro computers experienced an issue where the battery would not charge beyond 1 %.
MacBook Pro Battery: “Service Recommended”
The update was apparently unable to help some of them. The affected devices include the following models:
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four Thunderbolt 3 ports) – MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
- MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)
If the battery status still shows "Service Recommended" after the latest update, the battery needs to be replaced. Apple says the battery replacement will be free of charge. macOS Big Sur users can determine if their battery needs servicing by opening the System Preferences app, clicking Battery, selecting Battery in the sidebar, and navigating to Battery Health. On macOS Catalina or earlier, users can hold down the Option key and click the battery icon in the menu bar to open the Battery Status menu. (Photo by oasisamuel / Bigstockphoto)
