With the introduction of the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, Apple has introduced a quick-charge function for the Mac for the first time. This should allow the devices to reach a full 50 percent within 30 minutes. However, there are a few important features to note.
The fast-charging feature in the new MacBook Pro models is just one of many new features. Interestingly, however, there is a difference between the 14- and 16-inch models. While both models can be charged via Thunderbolt or MagSafe, only the 14-inch MacBook Pro can be fast-charged via both the USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 ports and MagSafe. The 16-inch MacBook Pro, on the other hand, can only be fast-charged via the MagSafe port. This is likely because the Thunderbolt 4 ports can charge at a maximum of 100W and the 16-inch MacBook Pro uses a 140W power adapter, so the same fast-charging speed cannot be achieved.
MacBook Pro 2021: Prospective buyers should know the differences
The 14-inch model, on the other hand, uses a 67-watt power supply for the 8-core device and a 96-watt power supply for the 10-core version, and thus does not reach the maximum TB4 performance. However, this limitation is unlikely to play a major role for users during use. Nevertheless, interested parties should be aware of the differences, especially when choosing their cable and dock configurations.
