The repair service provider iFixIt has completely disassembled the new MacBook Pro. There are no changes on the outside, but something has changed on the inside.
How is the battery?
The battery has experienced a growth spurt - it now consists of six instead of five individual cells. This means that it is not only larger, but also heavier. It enters the ring with a whopping 232.7 grams of fighting weight, while its predecessor only managed 196.7 grams. The battery life has not changed, however. The overall weight of the device also remains the same, as Apple was more economical in other areas.
Improvements and eliminations
Each key has a silicone protector - this is responsible, among other things, for reducing typing noise and preventing dust and crumbs from getting inside. The larger battery means the speakers are now longer but flatter. The service port, which was intended for reading the SSD memory during service, is no longer there. Instead, the trackpad can now be removed directly without the battery. The keys can also be removed without breaking.
The T2 chip, previously only known from the iMac Pro, is also new in the MacBook Pro. Among other things, it is responsible for managing the SSD, encryption and the "Hey Siri" function. It also stores the biometric data from Touch ID.
The USB-C port is now made of plastic rather than aluminum. The matching power supply that is included has also been revised. It is said to have more foam rubber and be better shielded.
The components are usually firmly connected to one another - the keyboard, speakers and battery are glued together, the processor, RAM and mass storage are soldered onto the motherboard. This means that individual replacement is not possible, nor is it possible to improve the internals later.
