Some users report that the new 16-inch MacBook Pro doesn't always charge when it's completely shut down. Others have problems with external monitors not waking up correctly in clamshell mode.
Some users of the new 16-inch MacBook Pro are reporting hardware issues with MagSafe charging and using external monitors. The first report on Reddit (via "Trillionaire") included a video showing what happens when the user tries to charge the device. While the M1 Max MacBook Pro is completely turned off, the MagSafe charging port flashes orange, indicating that it is not charging properly. According to the affected person, Apple Support is investigating the issue and says that "Apple is aware of the issue." Apple Support recommends affected users:
- Charging the MacBook Pro in sleep mode
- Charging the MacBook Pro with the lid open
- Connect the MagSafe cable before shutting down your MacBook Pro.
MacBook Pro 16″: Those affected should contact Apple
Interestingly, according to the thread, the problem does not seem to apply to charging via USB-C. Regardless, users have reported problems using external monitors in Apple's support forums. Some problems affect the use of external monitors on all Macs running macOS Monterey. Others say that only the new MacBook Pro has the problems. Typically, in these cases, it is reported that the external monitors do not reliably "wake up" after the lid of the MacBook Pro has been opened and closed. If any of you are affected, it is recommended that you open a ticket with Apple Support. This step not only protects you if the problem is more serious than originally thought, but also provides Apple with additional data to classify and solve the problem accordingly. (Image: Apple)
