The MacBook Air, updated by Apple last week, appears to have a slower SSD than its predecessor – this has now been confirmed by a test.
The French website Consomac compared the new MacBook Air model with the 2018 version and found that the SSD read speed in the 2019 model is significantly lower. Consomac tested a 2019 MacBook Air with 256 GB of storage and found a write speed of 1 GB/s and a read speed of 1.3 GB/s. An equivalent model from 2018 had a write speed of 920 MB/s and a read speed of 2 GB/s in the same test. While the write speed has increased, the read speed has decreased by a whopping 35 percent. Other SSDs with higher capacities were not tested.
Up to 1 TB flash storage
It is possible that Apple opted for slower SSD performance to bring the price of the new MacBook Air 2019 down to a more affordable level. The performance difference may seem a bit high at first glance, but this should not deter potential buyers - a normal user will not notice the difference. The new MacBook Air 2019 has been equipped with True Tone technology and receives the new eighth generation dual-core Intel Core i5 processor. There are two simple configurations to choose from - both can of course be optimized. The new MacBook Air 2019 can be equipped with up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of flash storage. The starting price is 1,249.00 euros and can rise to up to 2,239.00 euros with the maximum configuration.
