There seems to be a new problem emerging. This time it affects the charging process. A few iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max devices seem to be affected.
Is now next to “Selfiegate" a "Chargegate“ to be expected? Users of the new devices are complaining about charging difficulties. Many report in Apple's official support form that their iPhone Xs Max cannot be charged when locked. In isolated cases, the Xs models and older devices are also affected. The error occurs regardless of the cable. Affected devices must be connected while awake for the charging process to be activated. The problem does not occur with iPhones that are charged wirelessly.
Software bug or hardware error?
There are currently two possible causes for the error. Apple has identified the “USB Restricted Mode“ was introduced with iOS 11.4.1. This is intended to make the work of tools such as GrayKey or similar tools for unlocking iPhones significantly more difficult.
If an iPhone is not unlocked within an hour, the connection is completely deactivated. It is suspected that this is precisely where a bug is occurring that is currently preventing charging in sleep mode. Another theory is actually a hardware error. Some of those affected have already exchanged their iPhone, but then had the problem again. Due to this fact, a software problem is increasingly likely. Apple itself has not yet commented on this. It remains to be seen whether the next software update will resolve the problem.
Enable USB Restricted Mode
As soon as a device has been updated to iOS 11.4.1, the mode activates automatically. You can find it in the settings under "Touch ID & Passcode" (iPhone X "Face ID & Passcode"). The switch is deactivated by default, so the iPhone must first be unlocked so that USB accessories can connect if the iPhone has been locked for more than an hour. Charging the battery should always be possible.
