iPhone users have been waiting for this day for a long time – now it is finally here. The iPhone becomes an ID card – the AusweisApp2 is here!
Paying with the iPhone has long been part of everyday life for many fans - now the online ID function has been added. In a press release it was announced that the AusweisApp2 is now available for download in the App Store. The announcement states:
"We are very pleased that we can now also make the AusweisApp2 available to iPhone users. Demand has grown steadily in recent years. The opening of the NFC interface by Apple and, last but not least, the good exchange with our client, the Federal Office for Information Security, have made this possible." – says Dr. Stephan Klein, Managing Director of Governikus GmbH & Co. KG, which develops and continuously maintains the AusweisApp2 on behalf of the federal government.

The original release date was set for September 30th, but now the eagerly awaited application has been released earlier. With iOS 13, Apple opened the NFC interface in iPhones and thus made the basis for such a function possible. However, the AusweisApp2 requires iOS 13.1, as some optimizations in the operating system were necessary for the use of the online ID function. Users have the same range of functions available as Android users. The statement says:
"The AusweisApp2 for iOS has the same range of functions as the Android version. This means that the data required for online identification can be read directly from the ID card on an iPhone 7 and above via NFC and used in online offers. In addition, the iPhone can function as a card reader for use with a desktop PC or a tablet. Of course, PIN management is also available for setting or changing the ID card PIN."
In addition to the ID card, other features are also to follow. In the future, iPhone users will be able to digitize their passport and use it at the airport, for example. An eVisa will also soon be available - according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. In previous versions of iOS, Apple has limited the NFC interface in iPhones to Apple Pay. iOS 13 partially removes this technical restriction so that iPhones can read more NFC chips. The prerequisite for this is that developers obtain approval from Apple. If they are granted approval, the function can be implemented in the respective app. AusweisApp2 Download (Photo by NZPhotography / Bigstockphoto)
