Rumor has it that the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models will feature Always-On Display technology similar to the Apple Watch. Clues to what the Always-On Display might look like can now be found in the latest Xcode 14 beta.
As the US blog MacRumors reported, the Xcode 14 beta features an interesting lock screen interface that eliminates details from an on-screen widget when the screen wakes. The animation suggests that the iPhone 14 Pro models could remove intricate details from widgets and other lock screen content when the iPhone is locked and the always-on display is active. iOS developer @rhogelleim also noticed signs of a black-and-white version of a widget that normally displays in color in the Xcode 14 beta, which could be related to the always-on display. The latest iOS 16 beta also includes references to a "sleep" state for wallpapers, providing more information about how the always-on display will work. The "sleep" versions of the wallpapers are darker and fade out bright colors, perhaps preserving battery life when using an always-on display.
iPhone 14: These innovations are expected
Rumors suggest that the Always-On Display feature will be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, as these devices will have the necessary display technology. Rumors suggest that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will come with refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, which is an improvement over the 10Hz to 120Hz refresh rates available on the iPhone 13 Pro devices. The 1Hz refresh rate will allow the time, widgets, and perhaps notifications to be visible when the iPhone is asleep. Rumors also suggest that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will feature a notch-less design, instead featuring pill-shaped and punch-hole cutouts for Face ID and the camera hardware, improved rear cameras, and A16 chips.
