One of the new features on the iPhone 14 Pro is the Always-On Display, which reduces the refresh rate to 1Hz when the phone is not in use, allowing users to quickly check the time and widgets on the lock screen even when the screen is “off.”
The Always-On Display feature has an undeniable impact on battery life. But Apple will soon show users details on the feature's battery consumption. While many users have always wanted an Always-On Display on the iPhone, this feature comes at a price. In this case, it's higher battery consumption. Despite all the optimizations, such as reducing the refresh rate to 1 Hz when the screen is not in use, displaying items on the screen still consumes more battery than displaying nothing at all. Since the launch of the iPhone 14 Pro, a number of users have posted tests online comparing battery consumption with the Always-On feature enabled.
iPhone 14 Pro Always-On Display: iOS 16.4 shows the exact consumption
And for those who really want to know how much battery life the function consumes, Apple will make it easier with iOS 16.4. As the US blog 9to5Mac in the iOS 16.4 beta code, the company is adding details about the battery consumption of the Always-On feature in the Settings app. This means that users will see a new category for the Always-On indicator in the Battery menu, similar to how there are already specific categories for things like Personal Hotspot and more. Essentially, this option should help users decide whether or not to leave the feature enabled. According to some comparison tests, the Always-On feature can consume up to 20% of an iPhone 14 Pro's battery in 24 hours. If you leave the Always-On feature enabled but forego the wallpaper, the phone will consume about 14% of the battery in the same period. (Photo by kreminska / Bigstockphoto)
