Over the past few months, there have been multiple claims that the iPhone 13 series would support mmWave 5G in more countries. Now it has been confirmed that this is not the case.
Apple's cellular compatibility website confirmedthat only the US models of the iPhone 13 series support the mmWave 5G bands. In addition, on the Apple product pages for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, the devices are only shown with a mmWave antenna area on the US website, while in all other countries the mmWave antenna area is not visible. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo originally predicted that the iPhone 13 models that support mmWave 5G would be available in additional markets such as Canada, Japan, Australia, and select European countries. The Taiwanese market research firm TrendForce had also expected that iPhones with mmWave 5G would be available in more countries, citing its own research.
iPhone 13 models have greater 5G coverage
As a reminder, there are two main 5G standards known as sub-6HGz and mmWave 5G. Sub-6 GHz is slower than mmWave 5G technology, but it has a longer range - suitable for rural areas. Since mmWave is faster but has a shorter range, this technology is more intended for large cities or urban areas. According to Apple, the iPhone 13 models support a total of additional 5G bands, so that the devices have greater 5G coverage around the world. All four iPhone 13 models can be pre-ordered from Apple starting Friday, September 17th. Delivery is scheduled to start on September 24th.
