Chip manufacturer Qualcomm originally wanted to announce further details about the new 5G modem X60 at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) event. However, due to the coronavirus epidemic, the event was cancelled.
Due to the cancellation, Qualcomm now change its plans and promote the possible iPhone candidate during the “What's Next in 5G” event. The company originally unveiled the new 5G modem – third-generation Snapdragon X60 - last week. But not everything was revealed. The chip was manufactured using the 5nm process and supports super-fast download and upload speeds. According to Qualcomm, it should offer a download speed of over 7.5 Gbps while the upload speed is around 3 Gbps.
iPhone 12 could get Snapdragon X60
According to the company, the new 5G modem is the first of its kind to cover both mmWave and all sub-6GHz spectrum, including 4G. Although Qualcomm has already stated that the new 5G modem will be used in the first smartphones in early 2021, there is still a possibility that the upcoming iPhone 12 will already use the new chip, as the first smartphone manufacturers are allowed to start the test phase shortly. Which phone would be best suited for such a powerful chip? Apart from that, there were several reports last fall that the iPhone 2020 would get the best 5G modem available on the market. Now some believe that Apple could possibly enter into an exclusive contract with Qualcomm to equip the iPhone 12 with it.
