In April, we first documented reports that WhatsApp wanted to enable the migration of chat histories between iOS and Android. Now the company is at least partially rolling out this long-awaited feature.
One of the biggest hurdles for users who want to switch between Android and iOS is the inability to transfer their WhatsApp chats between the two ecosystems. But that is now over, as WhatsApp has officially announced that it will allow users to transfer their chats between Android and iOS. As Engadget reported, WhatsApp announced the new feature during Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event. WhatsApp had to test the feature intensively over the last few weeks because, according to the company, it was quite difficult to implement due to the "end-to-end encryption".
Migrating WhatsApp chat histories: Future iPhone users must be patient
There is a catch, however. According to the company, the feature will be available on Android devices first, specifically Samsung smartphones. So if iPhone users switch to Samsung, they will be able to use it first. The transfer will include the chat itself, photos, videos and voice notes and should be available to Samsung users in the "coming weeks". It is not known when the feature will be available for future iPhone users and other Android devices. The full rollout could still be ongoing. (Photo by Unsplash / Dimitri Karastelev)
