Apple is introducing a number of improvements with iOS 19, particularly for messaging. A key feature is support for RCS Universal Profile 3.0. This significantly improves communication between iPhones and Android devices, including end-to-end encryption and new message editing features. RCS was already introduced in iOS 18, but in an older version with limited features. With iOS 19, Apple is now taking a major leap forward and closing the gap to current standards.
Apple had long clung to its own messaging system, iMessage, while Android users relied on RCS. iOS 18 brought RCS to the iPhone for the first time, albeit only in version 2.4. While this meant better image quality and read receipts, many important features were missing. The GSMA has since released RCS 2.7, which, among other things, adds the ability to respond to, edit, or delete messages. These features were missing in iOS 18 because Apple used an outdated version of RCS. This will change with iOS 19, as Apple is making the leap to RCS 3.0.
iOS 18: Old RCS version with many restrictions
When Apple introduced RCS in iOS 18, it was a step forward, but version 2.4 had clear limitations. Users did get:
- Better quality images and videos
- Read receipts
- Writing indicators
However, many features that were already available in newer RCS versions were missing. Android users could already respond to messages or edit them afterward. These options weren't available for iPhone users. In June 2024, the GSMA released RCS 2.7 with important new features:
- Replies and reactions to messages, including custom emojis
- Editing and deleting sent messages
- Ability to recall messages
Apple had already integrated RCS into iOS 18 at that time and therefore did not support these new features.
iOS 19: Apple brings RCS 3.0 and more security
With iOS 19, Apple is finally catching up. The company has announced that it will support RCS Universal Profile 3.0. The biggest advantage is end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, which significantly improves security. Additionally, the update brings all the features introduced with RCS 2.7, including:
- Reactions with custom emojis or Genmojis
- Edit and recall messages
- Increased control over sent content
Apple hasn't given a precise timeline for the introduction of these features, but it is clear that they will come during the lifecycle of iOS 19 (via 9to5mac).
Why RCS 3.0 is important
With support for RCS 3.0, messaging between iPhones and Android devices is significantly improved. End-to-end encryption makes RCS messages more secure and prevents third parties from reading them. Previously, mixed group chats with Android users often caused problems because iPhones relied on SMS fallbacks. With RCS 3.0, this is a thing of the past. The new features provide a seamless messaging experience that's closer to iMessage. Key benefits of RCS 3.0 for iPhone users include:
- Secure message exchange through encryption
- High-quality media transmission without compression
- Synchronized read receipts and typing indicators
- More control over sent messages
Android users have had many of these features for some time, but for iPhone users they are new with iOS 19.
RCS 3.0 in iOS 19: A big step for iPhone users
Apple is significantly improving the messaging experience with iOS 19. RCS 3.0 brings end-to-end encryption, new editing features, and better reactions. This closes a significant gap with Android and makes RCS a viable alternative to iMessage. The exact timeline for launch is still unclear, but it's certain that iPhone users will benefit from a more modern messaging system in the future. (Image: Apple)
