In today's digital world, managing photos plays a crucial role. With the introduction of iOS 18, Apple has fundamentally redesigned the Photos app to increase usability and efficiency.
The iOS 18 Photos app has received a new design that transforms the previous Library and For You sections into an integrated overall view. This redesign aims to make finding and managing your photos even easier and more intuitive. A central part of these changes is the revised "Other" section, which includes numerous new categories to find different types of images quickly and efficiently.
Revised "Other" section
The Other section in the iOS 18 Photos app has been significantly expanded. While in iOS 17 you could only access Imports, Duplicates, Hidden and Recently Deleted, iOS 18 offers a variety of new categories:
- Hidden: For photos kept private.
- Recently Deleted: Easily recover recently deleted pictures.
- Duplicates: Finds and manages duplicate photos.
- Receipts: Quickly find receipts and invoices.
- Handwriting: Recognition and sorting of handwritten notes.
- Illustrations: Organizes artistic drawings and sketches.
- QR codes: All scanned QR codes at a glance.
- Recently saved: Easily find recently saved images.
- Recently viewed: Quick access to recently viewed photos.
- Last edited: Overview of recently edited images.
- Recently shared: Photos you recently shared.
- Documents: Management of scanned documents.
- Imports: Overview of all imported images.
- Maps: Photos that contain maps or geographic information.
These new categories make finding specific images much faster and more efficient. Instead of laboriously scrolling through the entire photo library, you can now search specifically for certain types of photos.
media types and animations
In addition to "Other", the Photos app also offers various media types. A new addition is the Animations category, which includes animated images and GIFs. This addition could be related to the image generation tools that Apple introduced as part of the Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18.
Pinned collections
Another important new feature is the "Pinned Collections" section. Here you can pin frequently used categories such as videos, favorites, screenshots and selfies to have quick access to your favorite content. These collections are individually customizable and allow you to always have your most important photos at hand.
Improvements in iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia
The changes and improvements mentioned are not limited to iOS 18, but can also be found in iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. This ensures seamless integration and consistency across all your Apple devices.
