The launch of iOS 18 beta 3 marks a significant step in the evolution of messaging on iPhone. With this latest beta, Apple has broadened Rich Communication Services (RCS) support, making it available across numerous carriers worldwide.
Last month, Apple reached a major milestone with the release of iOS 18 beta 2 by enabling RCS messaging for the first time on some U.S. carriers. The introduction of RCS brings numerous benefits that were previously only available in instant messaging apps like WhatsApp. With the new beta version, this service is now being expanded to many more carriers around the world, significantly improving communications for iPhone users.
RCS on iPhone: What's new with iOS 18 Beta 3?
With iOS 18 beta 3, Apple has enabled RCS support on more carriers, both in the US and internationally. This means that iPhone users now have the ability to send rich text messages, larger media files, and audio messages to Android users. In addition, RCS offers features like read receipts that were previously only available through iMessage.
International Expansion
For the first time, RCS support is being rolled out overseas. Customers of wireless carriers such as Videotron, Telus Mobility and Bell in Canada, Telefonica in Spain, SFR in France and O2 in Germany can now use RCS on their iPhones. In the US, RCS continues to support AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.
Advantages of RCS
RCS offers numerous advantages over traditional SMS:
- Rich text messages: Send rich text messages with formatting.
- Multimedia support: Send larger media files and audio messages.
- Read receipts: See when your message has been read.
- Improved group chats: Benefit from enhanced features in group chats.
Although RCS messages will continue to display green speech bubbles, the label “Text Message – RCS” will be added in the Messages app to indicate the new feature.
Activating RCS on your iPhone
If you have already updated your iPhone to iOS 18 Beta 3 and use one of the supported carriers, you can enable RCS as follows:
- Open Settings: Go to your iPhone's Settings.
- Navigate to Messages: Go to Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Enable RCS: If the RCS switch appears, you can turn it on.
If the RCS switch isn't visible, it's probably because your carrier doesn't yet support RCS on iPhone. Carriers must provide an updated bundle of settings to enable RCS, which comes with new beta versions of iOS.
