Apple has released the first beta of iOS 18.5 for developers. The update doesn't bring any major new features, but focuses on minor improvements to existing features. Development of iOS 18 is almost complete, as iOS 19 is due in the next few months. Nevertheless, it's worth taking a look at what's new in iOS 18.5—especially if you use the Mail app regularly or want to keep an eye on AppleCare.
iOS 18.5 is a typical interim update: no major changes, but practical adjustments that improve usability. The changes to the Mail app are particularly noticeable, where two frequently used options have been made more accessible. There are also visible improvements to AppleCare information in Settings. Those looking for a cleaner user experience should benefit from this. More features could follow in future betas.
New features in the Mail app
In iOS 18.5, you can now change two settings in the Mail app directly via the three-dot menu in the top right corner:
- Contact photos can be switched on or off there
- Grouping by sender can be deactivated there
Both options were already available in iOS 18.4, but they were only accessible via the Settings app. In iOS 18.5, you can now access them directly in the Mail app, which is faster and more clearly laid out. If you want to use the Mail app more like it did before iOS 18, these switches are perfect for you. Alternatively, you can still adjust them in the Settings app under "Mail."
AppleCare information in Settings
In the Settings app, under General > AppleCare & Warranty, there is now a new banner with the AppleCare logo. This banner lets you learn more about your AppleCare coverage directly. This is new – there was no banner there in previous versions. You will also now find a new AppleCare option under your Apple ID account when you select a device from your list. This option lets you see your current coverage status and manage your AppleCare plan, if you have one, or want to purchase a new one. These changes make it easier to find information about AppleCare faster without having to click through multiple menus.
What else could come
So far, this is the first beta of iOS 18.5. It's possible that Apple will add more features or make minor changes in future beta versions. Those who regularly use betas should keep an eye on the updates. Any new features will likely be announced gradually – either through Apple's announcements or through user feedback.
When will iOS 18.5 be released
For the past three years, Apple has released its iOS 18.5 updates in May, usually during the second week of May. If Apple sticks to this schedule, iOS 18.5 should also be released in May 2025—presumably around May 13. There's no official date yet, but so far, Apple has been fairly consistent on this point.
iOS 18.5 cleans up before iOS 19 arrives
iOS 18.5 is a small but meaningful update. The changes to the Mail app provide more control and faster operation. The new AppleCare information provides more clarity. For users who pay attention to such details, the update is a step in the right direction. Those already using iOS 18 will be pleased with the improvements – even though iOS 19 is already on the horizon. Top accessories and HomeKit options – all in our Amazon Storefront! (Image: Apple)
