Apple will introduce a significant change for HomeKit users with iOS 18.4. Anyone who has previously used the old HomeKit architecture will soon be forced to switch to the new version. In the current beta version of iOS 18.4, there are clear indications that support for the older architecture will soon end. This could be problematic for many users, especially those with older smart home accessories.
Apple regularly updates its systems and always makes radical changes. The new HomeKit architecture was introduced in 2022, but not without problems. Many users have so far avoided the upgrade in order not to jeopardize their existing smart home setup. With iOS 18.4, this option will probably no longer apply. Anyone who wants to continue using HomeKit will have to upgrade - even if that means that some devices will no longer work.
The development of the HomeKit architecture
With iOS 16.2, Apple launched a revised HomeKit architecture at the end of 2022. This was intended to ensure faster response times and a more stable connection. But shortly after the introduction, many users reported problems, which is why Apple withdrew the upgrade in December 2022. It was not rolled out again until iOS 16.4 in February 2023. The special thing: The upgrade was optional until now. Anyone who wanted to could continue to use the old HomeKit architecture. Many did just that to avoid potential problems and ensure the compatibility of older devices. But this option will soon no longer be available.
Apple makes the HomeKit upgrade mandatory
In the third developer beta of iOS 18.4, there are clear indications that Apple will stop supporting the older architecture. The code contains new warnings that urge users to update now to avoid disruption. This means that HomeKit users will have to update to the new architecture as soon as iOS 18.4 is released. Devices that are not compatible with the new structure may then no longer work (via 9to5mac).
What are the effects of the update?
- Older HomeKit devices could fail: Anyone who still uses older smart home devices should check whether they are compatible with the new architecture. If not, the only option may be to replace them with newer models.
- Better performance for compatible devices: Those who have already switched to the new architecture or are using current devices will benefit from improved stability and faster response times.
- Apple is continuing its strategy: Apple is known for eventually no longer supporting old technologies. The forced switch to the new HomeKit architecture fits into this pattern.
When will the update come?
iOS 18.4 is expected to be released in April. In addition to the HomeKit change, the update brings other new features, including an Apple Vision Pro app and new emojis as well as Apple Intelligence in the EU. The originally planned Siri improvements through Apple Intelligence, however, have been postponed.
End of the old HomeKit architecture is approaching
With iOS 18.4, Apple is forcing all HomeKit users to upgrade to the new architecture. Anyone who has consciously decided not to update must now be prepared for the fact that older devices may no longer work. It remains to be seen how the change will work in practice and whether there are alternatives for affected users. What is certain is that Apple is consistently continuing its course and is constantly pushing users towards new technologies. (Image: Apple)
