Apple has released the second beta of iOS 18.4 and with it a number of new emojis that will soon be available on iPhones and other Apple devices. These new symbols come from the Unicode 16 standard, which was adopted in September 2024. As usual, it took Apple a few months to integrate the new emojis into its own design and incorporate them into the iOS system.
The last major emoji expansion was with iOS 17.4 in March 2024. Now comes another update with new symbols that will be available for messaging, social media, and other communication platforms in the future.
These new emojis come with iOS 18.4
The second beta of iOS 18.4 added several new emojis. These belong to the Unicode 16 standard and were officially approved last year. Apple has now designed them and integrated them into the current iOS version. Here is an overview of the new symbols:
- Face with dark circles under the eyes – An emoji that represents tiredness or exhaustion
- Fingerprint – Can be used for identity, security or digital authentication
- Leafless tree – Often symbolizes winter or environmental changes
- Root vegetables – An addition to the food emojis that could represent beets, for example
- Harp – A musical instrument that plays a role primarily in classical or cultural contexts
- Shovel – A tool used in both construction and gardening
- Splash – Can be used in many ways, such as for water, movement or creative representations
These new emojis expand Apple's already extensive emoji offering and enable even more precise forms of expression in digital communication.
Why don't new emojis appear immediately after they are approved?
Although the Unicode 16 standard was released in September 2024, it took several months for Apple to integrate the new emojis into iOS 18.4. This is because Apple designs its own graphics for each emoji that fit into the existing design of iOS. In addition, all new symbols are extensively tested before they are included in the final version of the operating system. In the past, there has always been a certain delay between the approval of new Unicode standards and their integration into iOS. For example, new emojis such as the lime, an edible brown mushroom, a phoenix and a broken chain ring were introduced with iOS 17.4 in March 2024 - also several months after the release of the Unicode standard to which they belong.
What's next? Unicode 17 brings more new emojis
After Unicode 16, Unicode 17 is already in the starting blocks, which is planned for next year. Apple is expected to introduce these new emojis in one of the iOS versions in 2026. The upcoming selection includes some extraordinary symbols, including:
- Hairy creature (similar to Bigfoot) – A fantasy creature that may represent myths and legends
- Distorted Face – A New Way to Express Strong Emotions
- Battle cloud – Known from comics, often as a symbol for a conflict
- Apple Core – An extension of the well-known apple emoji
- Orca (killer whale) – A new animal representation
- Trombone – Another addition for music lovers
- Landslide and treasure chest – two symbols with versatile uses
When exactly these emojis will appear on Apple devices depends on Apple's implementation. They are expected to be introduced in one of the future iOS versions - i.e. with iOS 19.
Seven new emojis: What's new in iOS 18.4
With iOS 18.4, Apple is expanding its emoji set to include some new symbols from Unicode 16. Users can look forward to a total of seven new emojis that will soon be available on iPhone and Co. As in the past, Apple took a few months to design the new symbols and integrate them into the system. The next major emoji innovations are planned for Unicode 17 in 2026. There are other interesting symbols here, such as a Bigfoot-like creature, a battle cloud and a distorted face. iOS 18.4 is currently in beta and will soon be rolled out to all users as an official update.
