Apple has barely completed the last updates and it's already moving on. The first beta versions of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, macOS 15.3, watchOS 11.3, tvOS 18.3 and visionOS 2.3 are now available for developers. While the beta phase follows on seamlessly from the previous updates, the new features already provide an exciting glimpse of Apple's next steps. Siri in particular is getting a significant upgrade with iOS 18.3. Here you can find out all the details about the new beta version and when you can expect the final version.
Apple is staying true to its strategy: After the release of iOS 18.2 and other updates for all operating systems, the next beta phase will start immediately. It was to be expected that this would happen before Christmas, as Apple usually follows a tight schedule. But it is also clear that development will not progress much further this year, as Apple traditionally has its Christmas break coming up soon. The second beta is therefore not expected until January, while the final versions are expected to appear in February or March.
What does iOS 18.3 bring?
Siri is getting smarter
One of the most exciting features of iOS 18.3 concerns Siri. The voice assistant will be able to make better use of contextual information. In concrete terms, this means that Siri can access data such as your chat history or email content to provide more relevant answers. It is important to know that this is not yet the completely new Siri generation, which is referred to internally as "LLM Siri". This development, which is based on modern AI, is not expected until 2025 or 2026 at the earliest. Another highlight is that Apple continues to offer the ChatGPT connection for extended voice functions, which was already introduced with iOS 18.2 - but only in selected regions. For everyone else, the classic Siri functionality remains, which is sensibly expanded with the update.
The beta phase and build numbers
Apple leaves little time between beta phases. iOS 18.3 is available to developers just one day after the previous beta is completed. As always, the build number gives an indication of how far development has progressed. An "a" at the end signals that the final version is already within reach. The further the letter is from the "a", the longer it will take. The current status suggests that Apple will continue quickly with the second beta in the new year. You can expect the finished version in a few months, probably in February or March.
Further improvements
In addition to the enhancements to Siri, iOS 18.3 also brings smaller but important optimizations. As usual, these include performance improvements and bug fixes. Known issues from the previous version, iOS 18.2, have been addressed to increase stability.
Compatibility and Availability
The first beta version is only available to registered developers. Apple wants to ensure that apps can be adapted to the new system early on. However, a public beta is likely to be expected at the beginning of the year. You can then test iOS 18.3 if your device meets the requirements. As always, not all older iPhone models are supported.
When will the update come?
It is expected that Apple will stick to its usual release schedule. The first beta is available now, the second will follow in January 2025. Apple should then release the final version of iOS 18.3 in March at the latest - but February is more likely. With iOS 18.3, Apple is once again showing that even smaller updates can bring big improvements. The expanded Siri functionality and performance optimizations in particular make the update exciting. As soon as the public beta starts, you can try out the new features for yourself. Are you looking for new accessories?
