Apple has released the first beta version of iOS 18.2, bringing some exciting new features and functions to iPhones that are compatible with Apple Intelligence. Even though the update is still in beta, many of the new features are already usable and offer an insight into what will change with the final version of iOS 18.2. From new image editing tools to ChatGPT integration - we take a detailed look at all the functions and improvements.
iOS 18.2 seems to be one of the most exciting iPhone updates in recent years. With the integration of artificial intelligence, the connection to ChatGPT and creative image and emoji tools, Apple is targeting a broad audience.
- Note: The updates are currently only available on devices that support Apple Intelligence. Important: For EU countries, there is a geo-block on iPhone and iPad that does not allow Apple Intelligence. However, there are no such restrictions on the Mac as long as the language is changed to US English
Apple Intelligence: New creative possibilities
iOS 18.2 expands the capabilities of Apple Intelligence with innovative features that focus on image and emoji design:
- Image Playground: The new Image Playground app and integration with Messages let you create stylized images based on inputs and photos of you and your friends. An exciting addition for anyone who wants to add a personal touch to their images.
- Image Wand: This feature complements the Notes app and allows you to turn simple sketches into detailed illustrations using the Apple Pencil (on iPad). This way, you can transform quick notes into attractive graphics.
- Genmoji: For emoji fans, iOS 18.2 brings Genmoji - custom emojis that you can create yourself. Other iOS users who are on older versions can see these emojis but only receive them as images. Genmoji is therefore an extension of the creative expression possibilities.
These new tools in Apple Intelligence make iOS 18.2 particularly attractive to users who want to communicate visually and customize content.
Siri with ChatGPT integration
With iOS 18.2, Siri goes a step further and can now forward requests to ChatGPT. This function must be activated manually and allows Siri to answer more complex questions and use information from different sources. The integration includes not only text but also image generation and recognition. Another useful detail: the screen answers. In this way, Siri can answer questions about what is currently visible on the display, such as "What can be seen in this photo?" You can find out more about ChatGPT and Siri below.
Visual Intelligence: Real-time object recognition
For iPhone 16 users, iOS 18.2 brings the visual intelligence feature. If you long-press the camera control button, you can point your iPhone at objects or places to get information about them. Whether it's a restaurant with reviews, text elements that you can copy or have read out, or questions about objects that you ask ChatGPT directly - the visual intelligence offers useful additional information and interactions with your surroundings.
Advanced writing tools and language support
Apple has expanded the writing tools in iOS 18.2: The "Rewrite Writing Tools" function now offers more styles and allows you to adjust the tone of your texts or choose more dynamic terms. Language support for Apple Intelligence has also been improved - in addition to US English, iOS 18.2 now also supports English variants from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Great Britain, which brings more flexibility for international users.
Optimizations in Apple Arcade and the Mail app
Apple Arcade has received a new dropdown filter menu in the "All Games" section in iOS 18.2, as well as the ability to disable game previews. The Mail app has also been redesigned: It can split emails into categories such as important messages, offers, newsletters and transactions. Larger contact images also now appear, and all emails from one source are summarized - practical for a better overview and an organized inbox.
EU exclusive: Deleting core apps and new default apps
With iOS 18.2, Apple is releasing some features exclusively for the EU. In the European Union, you can now delete certain core apps like the App Store, Safari, Messages, Camera, and Photos. Additionally, third-party browser apps are allowed to create their own web apps with custom engines for the iPhone home screen. Another addition is the new "Default Apps" section in Settings. Here you can set the preferred default apps for email, messages, browser, and more. In the EU, there are more choices, so users can also set third-party calling and messaging apps as default.
volume limit for audio content
New in the settings under "Sound and Haptics" is the option to limit volume. This function allows you to set the maximum volume for media such as music and videos. Practical for situations in which you do not want to exceed a certain volume to protect your hearing. Phone and FaceTime calls as well as alarms are not affected by this setting.
Privacy improvements in Safari
Apple has added an "Insecure Connection" warning in Safari that alerts you when you visit a website without a valid SSL certificate. This is another step to protect your data and a useful feature to minimize the risks of unsafe websites. Also new are import and export options for website data, as well as an improved tool for clearing history and website data.
Podcasts and iMessage Safety for Kids
The Podcasts app now offers the option to mark categories as favorites to access preferred content more quickly. For children in Australia, iOS 18.2 brings a tool for reporting inappropriate content in iMessages, especially nude photos or videos. Reported images are reviewed by Apple, and measures such as deactivating the sender's account or notifying law enforcement authorities can be taken. This feature will soon be available worldwide and will provide further protection for young users.
Additional functions
Apple has also made a small adjustment to the Control Center: There is now a new quick access option to activate "Type Siri". Satellite control has also been removed from the Control Center.
More control and new possibilities with iOS 18.2
iOS 18.2 brings a variety of new features and optimizations that put Apple Intelligence more in the foreground and increase user-friendliness. In addition to creative tools such as Image Playground and Genmoji, the update also offers practical adjustments in the areas of data protection, mail management and Siri integration with ChatGPT. EU users benefit from additional options for app customization and flexibility with standard apps. With iOS 18.2, Apple shows that it is responding to user feedback and wants to further improve the iPhone user experience - be it for creatives, security-conscious or international users.
