Apple has scheduled the release of iOS 17.2 in December, and this update promises to take the iPhone experience to the next level. Here are more than 25 exciting new features and improvements to look forward to.
iOS 17.2 and Co. are currently in beta and can be tested via the public Apple Beta Program and Apple Developer Program. As usual, a preview should not be installed on an actively used device, as they are usually quite unstable and prone to errors - we recommend using a second device for this.
Journal app for easy diary keeping
One of the most exciting additions in iOS 17.2 is Apple's new Journal app. Originally planned for iOS 17, it's finally here. This app offers a simple and clean interface that allows you to create and organize journal entries with ease. Entries are automatically dated, and you can add photos, audio messages, and locations to capture your memories.
schedule for your diary
Keeping a journal can be a challenge, but with iOS 17.2 it's easier. The new schedule feature reminds you to write entries regularly. You can set individual reminders that fit perfectly into your daily routine.
journaling suggestions
iOS 17.2 takes your journaling game right to the next level by offering journaling suggestions. This feature analyzes information from your phone, like exercise activity, media interests, photos, and important locations, to give you inspiring ideas for your entries.
Reflections for Writer's Block
Even the best writers experience writer's block from time to time. iOS 17.2 offers a solution in the form of "Reflections". This feature gives you ideas and topics for each entry when you're lacking inspiration.
Back up your diary
Keeping your journal entries secure is of utmost importance. iOS 17.2 adds improved security features, including encryption and password protection. You can protect your journal from unauthorized access by using your device password, Face ID, or Touch ID.
Simple Translations
iOS 17.2 makes communication across language barriers easier. The new custom translation option for the Action button (iPhone 15 Pro) lets you translate live conversations into different languages. This feature is especially useful for travelers, language learners, and people living in a globalized world.
Detailed weather forecast
Get detailed weather information with the new Weather widgets on your home screen. In addition to basic weather data, these widgets provide information such as chance of precipitation, UV index, wind speed, and air quality. You no longer have to switch to the Weather app to get this information.
Available from iOS 17.2: Shared music playlists
The music app gets a social dimension with the ability to create collaborative playlists and share them with friends, family or colleagues. Anyone can contribute their favorite songs to the playlist, which is a great way to discover new music and share music tastes with others.
stickers in messages
The Messages app is getting even more expressive, as iOS 17.2 offers an easy way to use stickers as alternative reactions. Instead of dragging stickers or emojis from the keyboard onto a message bubble, you can simply press and hold a message bubble and select "Add Sticker" to choose a matching sticker or emoji.
Record spatial videos
Owners of an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max can record spatial videos with iOS 17.2. These videos can be viewed in full immersion using Apple's Vision Pro headset, which is expected to launch in early 2024. The spatial videos offer an immersive experience that puts traditional videos in the shade.
Automatic music playlist
iOS 17.2 introduces an auto-generated Favorites playlist in Apple Music. This list is constantly updated and automatically includes your favorite songs without you having to manually select them.
Selective Listening Process
With iOS 17.2, you can selectively turn off your listening history. This means you can enjoy music or play music for your kids on your device without affecting your recommendations and shared playlists.
iMessage contact verification
iMessage security is further strengthened with Contact Verification. This feature adds an extra layer of trust and authenticity to your conversations by displaying a code confirming that you are communicating with the person you want to communicate with.
iCloud sync for messages
With iOS 17.2, you can sync Messages settings and customizations between Apple devices via iCloud. Settings you make on one device are automatically transferred to other devices connected to the same iCloud account, making it much easier to manage your Messages across devices.
New TV app experience
The TV app has been redesigned in iOS 17.2 to improve navigation and content discoverability. With an integrated Store section view and a planned removal of the iTunes app for TV shows and movies, the TV app will be even more user-friendly.
Improved emergency alerts
iOS 17.2 improves the reliability of emergency alerts on iPhone by introducing Local Awareness, which uses your approximate location to ensure you receive important alerts in real time, whether for severe weather or other vital information.
More color options for contact posters
Add more color to your contact posters with the new rainbow color option for your name. This is a great way to give your iPhone a personal touch.
iPhone as AirPlay receiver
iOS 17.2 turns your iPhone into an AirPlay receiver, meaning it's able to receive and share content from other devices.
Advanced Memoji Customization
With iOS 17.2, you get expanded customization options for your Memoji. You can now adjust various body characteristics, such as waist, bust, shoulders, and arms, to create a Memoji that more accurately reflects your personality.
real-time news updates
Stay informed about news events in real time with iOS 17.2. The News app now provides up-to-the-minute updates on important events so you always stay up to date.
No automatic addition of favorites
With iOS 17.2, you can prevent your favorite songs from being automatically added to your music library. This option gives you more control over your music collection.
Disable inline predictions
For those who find auto-complete suggestions annoying, iOS 17.2 adds the ability to disable inline predictions while typing. This means you can now turn off text completion without disabling all keyboard functionality.
FaceTime alerts for blocked contacts
FaceTime gets more secure with iOS 17.2. When a blocked contact tries to contact you on FaceTime, you'll receive a notification that lets you control the communication. Apple also provides alerts when you join a group call with a blocked contact or when a blocked contact joins a call you're already on.
Share contact posters in FaceTime
The option to share your contact poster is expanding to FaceTime and phone. You can choose whether to share your name and photo with contacts.
Improved warnings about sensitive content
The optional sensitive content warning feature has been expanded to work with contact posters in the Contacts and Phone apps, as well as stickers in the Messages app. This feature ensures that sensitive content is recognized and protected accordingly. iOS 17.2 promises a wealth of new features and improvements that will enhance your iPhone experience.
