Apple released the release candidate version of iOS 16 on Wednesday evening. A few minor new features were added, an overview of which follows.
One of the new features of the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 8 is crash detection. It uses new accelerometer and gyroscope sensors to detect a possible car crash so that the device automatically calls emergency services. iOS 16 RC includes a new Crash Detection API that third-party apps can use to request access to the feature. It is unclear exactly how the API works, but Apple could allow developers to integrate Crash Detection into their apps (which would be useful for remote diagnostics, for example). Of course, there will be a new privacy switch in iOS settings that lets you specify which apps have access to Crash Detection data.
New settings for the AirPods Pro 2
The AirPods Pro 2 have new touch controls on the stem of the earbuds that not only let you tap to play or pause playback, but also swipe up or down to adjust the volume. iOS 16 RC has a new setting that lets AirPods Pro 2 owners change the wait time between swipes to prevent accidental volume changes. Apple has also integrated new video guides into the system to help users disable Find My on a single AirPod or the new AirPods Pro charging case as an anti-stalking measure.
iOS 16: Turn off Always-on Display
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature an always-on display that works similarly to the technology in the Apple Watch. However, if you want a little more battery life, you can disable the always-on display in the iPhone settings.
startup sound for the iPhone 14 Pro
Another new feature of the iPhone 14 Pro models is the startup sound. More specifically, users will have the option to have the iPhone play a sound when turning the device on and off. Since the startup sound is played during the boot process, the chime is part of the bootrom of the new A16 chip - this is probably the reason why this option is not available for other iPhone models.
Find My Animation for Dynamic Island
The iPhone 14 Pro has a new Dynamic Island that not only replaces the notch but also brings a new concept of interactivity to this area. In addition to notifications and media controls, Dynamic Island also has a cool animation that shows the interaction with the Find My app.
