Apple has added support for Apple Pay in third-party browsers in the latest betas of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.
The additional support provided by MacRumors discovered represents a major change from iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 and earlier, where Apple Pay in the browser is only available in Safari. For example, Apple Pay is reported to be available in Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome starting with iOS 16 developer beta 4. However, there is also said to be Apple Pay support in Mozilla Firefox. MacRumors noted that the macOS versions of Edge and Chrome still do not offer Apple Pay support, presumably because they do not use WebKit, Apple's browser engine that is mandatory for third-party browsers on iOS and iPadOS. This suggests that Apple Pay support is dependent on WebKit and that Apple has made changes here to expand support for Apple Pay.
iOS 16: Apple Pay support in other browsers
It remains unclear when Apple made the change, as some users discovered Apple Pay support in third-party browsers as early as Developer Beta 2, while others only noticed support with Developer Beta 3. While the change is a step forward for third-party browser users on iOS and iPadOS, it's hard not to see the expanded support for Apple Pay in the context of Apple's growing antitrust issues, as Apple's ban on the browser engine and restrictions on third-party apps are increasingly being questioned around the world.
