If you're having issues with your American Express cards on iOS 16, you're not alone. Apple acknowledged an issue in the iOS 16 Beta 6 release notes where "American Express cards may need to be removed and re-added to Wallet."
The issue affects many users of iOS 16 Beta 6 - I personally can't reproduce it because I'm running the beta on a second device. Essentially, the problem is that your American Express cards are being removed from Apple Pay for no reason and you have to manually add them back to your device. Bugs are to be expected in the iOS 16 beta, but this one is particularly annoying. When your cards are removed from Apple Pay, you will receive an email from American Express. In this email, American Express describes several possibilities why this could have happened if you didn't make the change manually. Amex lists the following possibilities:
iOS 16 Beta 6: Amex cards suffer from the current beta
- You have deactivated the passcode on your watch
- You have signed out of iCloud on your watch
- Your card has been canceled.
There is also the possibility that your entire American Express card account has been canceled. The wording is just vague enough to make you think that the company has locked your account and taken away your access to your cards and possibly your Membership Rewards points, which sounds terrible in some cases. But Apple has already acknowledged an issue affecting Amex cards in the release notes. The wording in the release notes suggests that you may have to manually remove and re-add your cards. But that is not the case. Rather, the cards are removed on their own and you have to manually add them back. Since the problem is caused by iOS and is already known to Apple, we assume that this is exactly the problem that will be fixed in the next test versions. (Photo by Unsplash / CardMapr.nl)
