The first beta version of iOS 16.6 and iPadOS 16.6 reveals a promising feature called iMessage Contact Key Verification. This new security measure from Apple aims to prevent government agencies from intercepting the communications of critics, journalists and others. Back in December 2022, Apple had introduced comprehensive security precautions to protect its users' sensitive data in iCloud and iMessage. Now everything indicates that another feature will be activated soon.
The latest developer beta, released on May 19, includes a setting in iMessage that enables the iMessage Contact Key. MacRumors reportedthat the feature is available in the beta version but has not yet been activated in the current iOS version. This suggests that the feature will be available to all users in the near future. Apple had already announced that iMessage Contact Key Verification would be introduced in 2023, but did not give an exact date.
iOS 16.6: New security measures for your privacy
This feature extends the existing end-to-end encryption in iMessage and is specifically aimed at users who face "extraordinary digital threats," such as journalists, human rights activists, and government officials. These groups are often subject to attacks that attempt to bypass Apple's security mechanisms to intercept their private messages. iMessage Contact Key Verification allows users to ensure that their messages are only sent to the intended recipients without external interference. To further improve security, users can verify each other by matching a contact verification code in person, over FaceTime, or other secure communication channels. Of particular note, users who have enabled iMessage Contact Key Verification will be automatically notified if a government attacker gains access to the cloud servers or otherwise monitors encrypted communications, providing additional protection against unwanted government surveillance.
New Level of Security
With the introduction of iOS 16.6 and iPadOS 16.6, Apple is once again strengthening the privacy and security of its users. iMessage Contact Key Verification is an important security feature to protect the communications of particularly vulnerable people. Users can rest assured that their confidential conversations will remain private and will not be intercepted by unwanted third parties. iMessage Contact Key Verification in iOS 16.6 offers an effective solution to make surveillance by government agencies more difficult and to ensure the confidentiality of communications. With Apple's ongoing focus on data protection and security, the company is taking another step to meet the needs of its users and protect their sensitive information. At a time when privacy protection is becoming increasingly important, iOS 16.6 thus provides a solution to strengthen the digital security of journalists, human rights activists and other vulnerable users.
