The iPhone 12 and M1 iPad Pro are the first Apple devices to support a 5G connection. With iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, the devices will be able to give priority to 5G depending on the connection.
While 5G is still being rolled out, Apple is already preparing the field for the launch of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. With the first beta version rolled out to developers today, the iPhone 12 and M1 iPad Pro running the beta version will be able to have improved connectivity over 5G, as well as prefer this connection over WiFi. Loud Apple says other app and system experiences will be enhanced with faster 5G connectivity, including support for backing up to and restoring from iCloud backup, streaming audio and video content in Apple and third-party apps, downloading Apple TV+ content in higher quality, syncing photos with iCloud Photos, updating Apple News+ articles for offline reading, and downloading machine learning models.
iOS 15: 5G gets more possibilities
Little by little, Apple is giving its users more features over 5G. When the iPhone 12 was announced, one of the features in iOS 14 was to automatically switch between 5G and an LTE connection depending on network coverage. As 5G becomes more widespread, Apple is starting to give its users more options on how to use their data. For example, the iPhone 12 or the M1 iPad Pro running iOS 15 or iPadOS 15, respectively, can now automatically prioritize 5G when the connection is slow on occasionally visited networks or when the user is connected to an insecure network, allowing them to enjoy a faster and more secure connection.
