Apple released the fifth beta of iOS 15 to developers yesterday evening. As we approach the final release in September, the new beta updates contain only a few changes. However, there is actually one adjustment that is quite interesting. In the fifth build of iOS 15, Apple has added support for the WebM audio codec in Safari.
The new feature is considered experimental and can be activated or deactivated in Safari's advanced settings. As the US blog 9to5mac reported, according to the code, the feature appears to be enabled by default in iOS 15. The WebM Audio Codec is part of the open media file format developed by Google in 2010, which also includes the WebM Video Codec and the WebP image extension.
iOS 15: Integration of WebM video codec is expected
Apple has never been interested in adopting the WebP and WebM formats in the past, as company founder Steve Jobs once said that Google's codecs were "a mess." But with iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur, the company finally added support for WebP images in Safari. In another update rolled out to Safari 14 for macOS, Apple also added support for the WebM video codec. Now that the WebM audio codec has been integrated into iOS, it's only a matter of time before Apple adds WebM video support as well. (Photo by Denys Prykhodov / Bigstockphoto)
