iOS 15.2, released earlier this week, lets users reset and erase their locked iPhone or iPad without connecting to a Mac or Windows PC.
As in a support document described, iOS 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2 have a new Erase Device option for when a device has been locked due to multiple failed attempts to enter the device password. When you press Erase Device, you'll be asked to verify your identity with your Apple ID password, which will completely erase and reset the device.
iOS 15.2: Active Wi-Fi or cellular connection is required
The new option is a welcome addition and a departure from the previous method, which required customers to put their iPhone or iPad into DFU mode and restore it using Finder on Mac or iTunes on Windows. The new method in iOS 15.2, however, requires that the device already has an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection before it is locked. If not, users will not be able to connect to a network and will be forced to resort to the previous method. iOS 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2 include a host of new features, such as a new App Privacy Report, Apple Music Voice Plan, legacy contacts, and more.
