The so-called picture-in-picture function has been available to iPad users since iOS 9. However, YouTube has not supported the feature to date. But that is set to change in the future.
The picture-in-picture feature allows users to watch a video while using other apps. With iOS 14, the feature is now being extended to the iPhone. For this reason, Youtube now seems to want to support the native picture-in-picture feature in its own iOS app. According to some Twitter reports, picture-in-picture will be available with the latest version the YouTube application for iOS. However, the feature is not available to every user and cannot be applied to every video. It therefore seems that YouTube has not yet fully implemented PiP. According to previous reports, the feature works like in other applications. As soon as a video is played, the app can be exited.
Youtube: 4K content on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
The small image then appears and the user can run another application. Although YouTube has been offering video playback in the background for a long time, this is only available to YouTube Premium subscribers. However, no picture-in-picture is played, only the sound is played in the background. So the step of implementing the new feature for free should be a great joy. It should also not go unmentioned that under iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and tvOS 14, YouTube supports 4K HDR content on Apple devices for the first time. This is made possible by Apple's decision this year to implement Google's VP9 codec. It is currently not known when the picture-in-picture function will be available to all users. A widespread introduction could take place as early as autumn. (Photo by ibphoto / Bigstockphoto)
