Instagram is apparently working on a new feature: Reels, which can only be viewed with a specific code. The whole thing is currently being tested internally and could be an interesting tool for creators and fans in the future. The first hints of the feature have appeared on the official Instagram design account. You can find out exactly what's behind it and how it's supposed to work here.
Instagram regularly develops new features to make the platform more attractive – for both users and content creators. With "Locked Reels," Instagram is testing a new way to deliberately hide content and make it accessible only to a select audience. The principle is reminiscent of exclusive content behind a paywall or hidden stories, but technically takes a different approach. It will be interesting to see how this feature is received when it is officially rolled out.
What exactly are locked reels?
Locked Reels are regular Instagram Reels, but they aren't immediately visible. To view them, you must enter a specific code. Only then is the content unlocked. This could be a word that only you or your followers know—like your pet's name or a term previously mentioned in a story. This feature first appeared on the Instagram Design account. A Reel was posted there with a hint. Anyone who entered the correct code saw an animated banner with the text "coming soon." This was an announcement for the imminent launch of a Threads account by the Instagram Design team (via IG Design Account).

How does this differ from previous features?
Instagram already has features that allow you to target content to specific people – for example, the "close friends" function in Stories or Story links that you share via DM. The difference with Locked Reels: No direct contact is necessary. You don't have to write to anyone or create a list. Access is granted solely by entering a code, which you can freely choose and share, for example, in another post or via a note.
What possibilities does the feature offer for creators?
For creators, the new feature can offer several advantages. It allows you to more specifically control your content and reserve it for specific groups. This could look like this:
- Content for particularly active or long-term followers
- Puzzles or games with hidden clues
- Promotional campaigns or teasers for new projects
- Community engagement through exclusive content
The whole thing works without any additional tools or third-party providers. Everything stays within the app, making it straightforward.
What has Instagram said about this so far?
Instagram hasn't officially commented on the new feature, nor has there been a release date or confirmation as to whether the feature will be rolled out globally.
Instagram brings movement to the Reel function
Instagram is currently testing a new feature that allows Reels to be locked with a code. The test was first visible on the Instagram Design account. This opens up new opportunities for creators to share content more specifically and increase follower engagement. It's still unclear when or if the feature will be officially rolled out. But it's worth keeping an eye on—especially if you're an active Instagram user and looking for new ways to interact with your community. (Image: Apfelpatient)
