Apple today released a new iOS and iPadOS update with version number 12.5.4, with the new software aimed at older devices that are unable to run the iOS 14 update.
The iOS and iPadOS 12.5.4 updates can for free The software is available over-the-air in the Settings app on all eligible devices. To access the new software, go to Settings -> General -> Software Update. According to Apple's update description, iOS 12.5.4 introduces important security updates and is recommended for all users.
iOS 12.5.4 fixes three security vulnerabilities
Apple often releases security updates for older devices that are no longer able to receive the latest version of iOS to protect users from malware and other security vulnerabilities. Apple's security support document states that the update fixes three vulnerabilities that could lead to the execution of arbitrary code. Two of them, affecting WebKit, may have been actively exploited. One of these vulnerabilities was fixed in iOS 14.6, and the other two will likely be fixed in iOS 14.7.
