Apple released the new Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR earlier this week. Now there is a heated debate about the compatibility of the new monitor with the iMac Pro.
Shortly after the launch of both products, fans noticed that Apple had not included the iMac Pro in the list of all compatible devices with the Pro Display XDR. The question of why quickly arose. Now there is an answer. The Pro Display XDR is compatible with the iMac Pro and can therefore be used as a second screen - but limited to 5K. Confirmation comes from Thomas Grove Carter, a well-known video editor. But the Pro Display XDR supports 6K, so why only 5K? Carter believes he has discovered the reason. The iMac Pro uses Intel's older "Alpine Ridge" Thunderbolt 3 controller. The bandwidth for a 6K transmission would therefore not be sufficient.
6K resolution requires more
In order to use the Pro Display XDR with full 6K resolution, at least Intel's new "Titan Ridge" Thunderbolt 3 controller is required. This means that the new display can be operated in 6K resolution with the new Mac Pro 2019, MacBook Pro 15" 2018 or newer, MacBook Pro 16" and iMac 2019. Alternatively, Mac devices with Thunderbolt 3 ports in conjunction with a Blackmagic eGPU or Blackmagic eGPU Pro are also compatible. With a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits, Apple's new 32-inch screen is primarily aimed at professional users. The device can be purchased from just 5,499 euros.
