Apple unveiled the Mac Studio on Tuesday night, which comes standard with the powerful M1 Max chip. However, the company also offers a more expensive model with the M1 Ultra, a new Apple Silicon chip that's even faster than the M1 Max. Now, a Geekbench test has surfaced that gives us a better idea of performance.
On its own website, Apple compares the new chip with the 16-core Intel Xeon W processor that is in the Mac Pro. A leaked However, Geekbench results have shown that the M1 Ultra chip is more powerful than the 28-core Intel Xeon W, which is the most powerful processor available for Apple's tower computers. Unsurprisingly, the M1 Ultra scores 1747 on the single-core test, which is almost exactly the same as the other M1 variants (since the main difference between them is the number of cores). However, on the multi-core test, the 20-core M1 Ultra scores 24055 on the Geekbench 5 test. But how does this compare to Intel's high-end processors?
Mac Studio vs. Mac Pro: The result is surprising
The 28-core Intel Xeon W-3275M processor, which is the best you can get for the Mac Pro, scores 19,951 points in the multi-core test. That means the M1 Ultra is about 20% faster than the most expensive CPU available for the Intel Mac Pro. The numbers are definitely surprising, as the Mac Studio is much more compact and efficient than the Mac Pro. But that doesn't mean the M1 Ultra chip makes the Mac Studio better than the Mac Pro in every scenario. With the Mac Pro, users can combine two 64GB Radeon Pro graphics processors or even add up to 1.5TB of memory - components that have a bigger impact on some tasks than CPU performance. (Image: Apple)
