Facebook hosted a live event this evening to talk about the "metaverse," the virtual and augmented reality that will evolve in social technology in the future. As part of the presentation, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a new name for the company.
In the future, the social media giant will be known under the name “Meta”, while Facebook will continue to be offered as a social media product alongside WhatsApp and Instagram. Zuckerberg saidthat the Facebook brand is too limited to represent what the company wants to do in the future.
We are a company that builds technology to connect. Together we can finally put people at the heart of our technology. And together we can unleash a much larger creative economy. Right now our brand is still very closely tied to a product but I hope that over time we will be seen as a metaverse company.

The new name and brand represent Facebook's apps and evolving work on augmented and virtual reality products. The name is intended to "reflect who we are and what we hope to build," Zuckerberg said.

Rumors of Facebook's rebranding first surfaced in early October, as regulators began to scrutinize the company and the public grew wary. At the time, it was said that the new name would focus on the company's move toward the "metaverse." (Image: Meta - Facebook)
