The novel coronavirus poses new challenges not only for corporations but also for the global population. Now Netflix has also taken action.
While many people are now sitting at home, most are turning to Netflix. Of course, the world's largest streaming provider now has a considerable selection of series and films. But video streaming also generates a lot of network traffic. Network utilization is correspondingly high. In times like these, we should therefore handle it carefully. Netflix now seems to be of the same opinion. That is why the company has decided to throttle. This means that for the next 30 days (for the time being), the video quality will be reduced by around 25 percent across Europe. The video streaming platform confirmed this to Reuters. Henning Dorstwitz, Netflix spokesman, explained on Twitter:
Netflix has decided to reduce bitrates on all our streams in Europe for 30 days. We estimate that this will reduce Netflix traffic on the European networks by about 25 percent while maintaining a good quality of service for our members.
It can be assumed that other platforms will follow suit, although it is rumored that the move was made under pressure from the EU Commission. (Photo by porover / Bigstockphoto)
