In addition to the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung has now also launched the so-called SmartTags presentedThe trackers are intended to compete with Tile and Apple's unreleased AirTags.
In addition to the new Galaxy S21 lineup and the Galaxy Buds, Samsung has also launched a Bluetooth tracking tag presented - the Galaxy SmartTag. The Galaxy SmartTag is a $29.99 tracking accessory that uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to help users find lost or misplaced items. It pairs with Samsung's SmartThings app and displays the last known location of an item along with its current distance via BLE signal strength. Unlike the Tile trackers currently on the market, the SmartTag only works with Samsung Galaxy devices. It will not be compatible with other Androids or even an iPhone. Although some of Samsung's latest devices come with ultra-wideband technology, the $29.99 SmartTag does not support UWB tracking.
AirTags & SmartTag: Tile will not have it easy
UWB is a new technology that enables pinpoint location tracking and is expected to be one of the main features of Apple's "AirTags." In addition to Apple, Tile is also expected to unveil a UWB-equipped tracker in 2021. Samsung stated that a UWB version of the SmartTag, called SmartTag+, will debut later in 2021. Although an exact release timeline is not clear, the SmartTag+ will cost $39.99. The Samsung accessories, as well as Apple's expected "AirTags," are likely to put increasing pressure on Tile. In fact, Tile has already accused Apple of anti-competitive behavior in this area. Accordingly, future developments in this area remain exciting.
