Yes, Apple has done it again! Apple left out tvOS during the WWDC keynote, so let's take a look at what's new for the Apple TV.
Apple makes it very difficult to gather information about tvOS 16. While other operating systems have their own preview page, the Apple TV's software doesn't have one. Below we've summarized all the details we've managed to get thanks to developers and release notes.
- Compatibility with Nintendo Switch controllers: tvOS 16 will finally support Nintendo Switch's Joy-Cons and Pro Controller. Apple itself says that starting with tvOS 16, "many more Bluetooth and USB game controllers will be supported by the Game Controller."
- HomePod Software 16 public beta testing: For the first time, Apple will make the HomePod beta software available to public testers.
- HDR10+ support: The latest generation of High Dynamic Range technology is now supported in the Apple TV app on tvOS 16.
tvOS 16: A small but nice update
- Video previews on the Apple TV+ tab: Comprehensive video previews at the top of the Apple TV+ tabs help users discover their next Apple Original.
- Matter support: Matter is a new standard for smart home connectivity that allows compatible devices to work together seamlessly across platforms. With Matter, you can choose from even more compatible smart home accessories and control them with the Home app and Siri on Apple devices. This requires tvOS 16 and an Apple TV or HomePod as a home hub.
- Apple Fitness+: With tvOS 16, intensity metrics are called up at key moments of the workout and displayed on the screen for motivation. The intensities are easy, moderate, hard and full impact.
- New Remote App: With iOS 16, Apple now opens an app that lets you control your Apple TV when you open the remote control switch in the Control Center.
