Apple has made its streaming service Apple TV+ more accessible for Android users. There is now a native Apple TV app for Android smartphones, tablets and foldables. This eliminates the previous need to use Apple TV+ via the web browser. The app has numerous familiar functions and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
Apple TV+ has been available since 2019 and focuses on exclusive series, films and sports content. While the app was already available for smart TVs, game consoles and streaming sticks, Android users have so far had to do without a convenient app version. With the release of its own app for Android, Apple is now going a step further and opening up its streaming platform to a larger audience.
A newly developed app for Android
The Apple TV app was developed from scratch specifically for Android. It offers a user interface that is based on the Apple design but has been optimized for Android. Users can not only subscribe to Apple TV+ but also access the MLS Season Pass. The most important functions of the app at a glance:
- streaming of Apple TV+ and sports offerings
- Ability to subscribe to content via the Google Play Store
- Offline mode for downloading movies and series
- "Watchlist" for favorites
- "Continue watching" feature for seamless playback
- Support for Android smartphones, tablets and foldables
The Apple TV app requires at least Android 10 and offers a seven-day free trial for new users.
Apple TV+ as a streaming service
Apple TV+ was launched in November 2019 and focuses on exclusive content. While Apple does not release official subscriber numbers, it was estimated in 2022 that the service has around 25 million paying customers. Apple invests billions in high-profile productions, including series such as "Ted Lasso," "The Morning Show" and "Severance." In addition to films and series, it also includes a growing sports offering, including "Friday Night Baseball" and Major League Soccer.
Apple TV app already available on many devices
The Apple TV app is not only available on Apple devices but also on numerous other platforms. In addition to the new Android version, it is already available for:
- Smart TVs from Samsung, LG and Sony
- Streaming sticks like Chromecast with Google TV and Amazon Fire TV
- game consoles from PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
- Apple's own devices such as iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and Vision Pro
By expanding to Android smartphones, Apple is now reaching an even larger user base.
Apple is increasingly relying on Android
Although Apple traditionally prefers its own ecosystem, the company has released several Android apps in recent years. In addition to Apple Music, these include Apple Music Classical, the "Move to iOS" app for switching devices, and "Tracker Detect" for tracking AirTags. With the launch of the Apple TV app for Android, Apple shows that it is ready to make its streaming service accessible across platforms.
Apple TV+ now available directly in the Android app
The new Apple TV app for Android makes accessing Apple TV+ much easier. Users no longer have to browser but can stream or download films, series and sporting events directly in the app. The introduction of the app could help Apple TV+ to expand its reach and gain more subscribers. Anyone who wants to test Apple TV+ can now download the app from the Google Play Store and use the seven-day trial period. (Image: Apple)
